John Lewis posted its highest ever weekly sales performance for the second week in a row as fashion sales had a record week.

In the week to December 15 sales rose 11.1% at the department store chain to £147.8m and fashion sales rose 3.9%.

Sales soared across 24 John Lewis branches with Tamworth leading the way, followed by Poole, Swindon, Trafford and Norwich.

Online sales had a “tremendous” week with the growth of mobile orders “encouraging”. Click and collect sales rose 76% year-on-year.

Retail director Andrew Murphy said: “In a challenging year, I’d like to acknowledge our outperformance of the market both in shops and online. This achievement and especially our excellent sales over the last few weeks speaks volumes for the skillful, determined and relentless efforts of Partners across John Lewis.”
