John Lewis fashion sales boosted by online

Department store group John Lewis saw its online fashion sales for last week grow 88% on last year, driven by an increased womenswear and accessories offer on the website.

John Lewis revamped its website last September, adding more than 100 new fashion brands online across all categories. It said at the time it would add £70m to its online fashion sales by 2011.

Kidswear also performed well for the retailer, boosted by the sale of World Cup-related clothing in the week to June 12.

John Lewis said fashion as a whole performed well despite some menswear sales being lost due to Father’s Day falling later this year. The retailer predicts that fashion sales this week will benefit from a rush for Father’s Day gifts, particularly men’s linen shirts.

Turnover at the department store chain rose 15.3% to £52.9m last week.

The Trafford store and Knight & Lee in Southsea were the top performing stores, up 22% and 20% respectively.

John Lewis head of multichannel Simon Russell said: “We certainly enjoyed a steadier end to the week than the England team and recorded a score I suspect Fabio Capello would have been dreaming of.”
