John Lewis fashion sales continue to grow

Fashion sales continued to grow at John Lewis last week as cooler weather encouraged people to buy winter clothing.

Sales across John Lewis’ fashion department rose by 12.7% in the week to October 13 as overall sales at the department store chain grew by 8.6% compared to last year.

Susan Young, head of merchandising for central operations at John Lewis, said: Fashion led the directorates with the best year-on-year growth at 12.7 per cent. All buying groups were up but the most notable result was in Menswear at +19.5% against last year, with branded casualwear up 36%.”

She added: “With the cooler weather encouraging people to buy winter clothing, outerwear categories were significantly up on last year.”

Online sales accounted for a quarter of trade, with click and collect 77% up on last year and total online sales up 23.2%.

Sales increased in 29 of the John Lewis stores with Poole leading the way with a 19.7% rise.
