Fashion sales at John Lewis more than doubled over the week to March 13 buoyed by Mother’s Day and widened ranges.
Total sales at the department store rose by 18% to £53.2m, while fashion sales soared 24.2%.
Mother’s Day fell a week earlier against the year before and the retailer said every day of the week saw double-digit sales increases which peaked on Friday and Saturday amid last-minute gift buying for mothers.
The retailer added that even without the benefit of Mother’s Day, underlying trade was “powerful” and John Lewis expects another advance this week.
On a branch-by-branch basis Bluewater posted a 31.8% increase, while Liverpool’s 20.9% gain reflected successful Mother’s Day trade in fashions and gifts. Oxford Street took third place and a 19.9% gain with menswear and sports gaining most.
Online sales were up 42% over the week.
