Fashion sales soared 20.4% at John Lewis last week as cooler weather encouraged shoppers to buy autumnal ranges.
Total sales across the department store chain rose 16.2% for the week to October 6.
Paula Nickolds, buying director for home at John Lewis, said: “Fashion led the way this week, with womenswear, menswear and childrenswear all vying closely for the top spot as customers were prompted by the weather to consider their autumn wardrobe.”
She added: “Our own brand ranges performed particularly strongly, with mens’ Own Brand, Collection by John Lewis, and Somerset by Alice Temperley continuing to sell well and create excitement from customers.”
Many of the retailer’s stores delivered an impressive year-on-year increase. Top performers included Swindon, which saw a 20.2% rise, Poole with a 19.6% increase and Norwich with a 17.6% rise.
John Lewis also saw online sales soar with a 45.8% rise year on year.
