John Lewis fashion sales outperform online

Fashion sales at John Lewis have been boosted by a strong online performance, with customers responding well to spring 14 product.

Sales across the department store chain’s fashion arm rose 7.5% in the week to March 1 as total sales increased 6.9% to £68.76m.

Tim Harrison, head of format development, said fashion sales had been boosted by online growth. He added: “Women’s accessories and beauty put in a great performance against a tough comparison from a year ago. Also worth pointing out was the very strong growth in Kin womenswear.”

Harrison added: “Branches steadily grew sales ahead of last year. The best shop growth came from High Wycombe and then the maturing ‘at home’ shops, with Chichester, Newbury, Chester and Poole at the top of that list.”

Online sales remained strong with sales rising 25.3%. Fashion provided the fastest growth with customers responding well to the new season products thanks to improved weather.

Yesterday the retailer announced its partners will receive a 15% bonus as the group revealed gross sales broke the £10bn barrier for the year to January 25.
