Fashion sales surged by 16% at John Lewis last week boosted by the sunny weather and Mother’s Day gift buying.
Sales at the department store chain were the highest seen so far this half, with sales across all categories growing 3.1% to £60.9m in the week to April 2.
Spring handbags, footwear and clothing benefitted from John Lewis’ price matching policy and fashion sales were a “star performer” at both the Oxford Street and Peter Jones branches, which both saw double-digit increases last week.
Online had a good week, with sales up 32% and fashion sales on the web up 82%.
Dino Rocos, operations director at John Lewis, said: “The combination of Mother’s Day, price matching competitor activity and better spring weather gave sales a real boost with the week closing at +12% on the previous week and +3.1% on last year, the highest sterling sales of the half to date.”
He added: “Looking ahead, this week provides us with an opportunity to build on this success and capitalise on the later Easter and school holidays that will run into the royal wedding and May bank holiday.”
