John Lewis' price matching fuels sales

Fashion at John Lewis outpaced wider sales growth last week on the back of price matching activity across the department store chain.

In the week to May 18 fashion sales rose 13.9% as total sales across the retailer increased 8.8%. Women’s accessories led the way with strong trading for women’s footwear.

Maggie Porteous, director of selling for north and new format, described last week’s trade as “solid” with “pleasing results” across both the stores and online.

She added: “The weather last week was neither too hot nor too cold, and that coupled with the fact that we were price matching a competitor’s promotional event gave us some good footfall in the shops and a strong increase in traffic online.” The retailer price matched Debenhams’ ‘Summer Spectacular’ promotion.

Only 10 of John Lewis’ stores registered a drop in sales.

Tamworth came out in front with a 16.5% rise, with Glasgow also doing well recording a 15.1% increase, Leicester an 11.5% rise and Trafford up 10.5%. Meanwhile sales at Johnlewis.com rose 22.9%.
