John Lewis records 15.4% rise in fashion sales

Fashion sales at department store chain John Lewis were up 15.4% last week boosted by summer products and clearance lines.

Kidswear performed well for the retailer and girlswear was particularly strong with a 20% year-on-year increase.

Branded men’s and womenswear, casualwear, handbags, jewellery and women’s footwear all performed well across summer lines and Sale items.

Total sales at John Lewis were up 13.3% last week. The retailer reported it had to contend with hot weather, the World Cup and Wimbledon in the period to July 2, when sales reached £57.7m.

The preference of many consumers to stay at home was evident in the rise of online sales, which climbed 50%, again compared to last year before the website was relaunched.

Bluewater was the top-performing shop, posting a sales rise of 28%.

John Lewis launched its clearance Sale last weekend, and said there was a “creditable” 3% year-on-year increase on the Saturday and “double percentage improvements” on weekdays.
