John Lewis sales increase despite snow

Clothing sales at John Lewis rose 3% last week despite snowy weather putting shoppers off hitting the high street.

Total sales across the department store chain rose 9.8% in the week to January 26, which the retailer called “highly respectable” given that many areas of the country were affected by snow.

Sales at John Lewis online rose 43.5% with managing director Andy Street calling it a “sparkling” year for johnlewis.com.

Street added: “The week completed an impressive year. The encouraging feature for our omni-channel strategy is that both bricks and clicks saw strong growth. Indeed, nearly all shops recorded progress – impressive in a tough market with Trafford, Reading and Liverpool leading for full-line shops, while Poole, Croydon and Swindon led the charge for the new format crew.”
