John Lewis's weekly fashion sales climb 20%

Department store chain John Lewis generated a 17.7% sales rise to £55m in the week to May 8, boosted by a 20% rise in fashion sales.

Fashion’s strong performance was driven by sales of kidswear, where managing director Andy Street said John Lewis was fast growing market share.

Menswear also performed well for John Lewis with a steady performance in casualwear boosted by an upturn in the sales of suiting.

Street added: “Across the directorate the online score continues to excel with new brands finding rapid success.”

Street said John Lewis had outperformed the BRC April non-food sales data. But he cautioned: “We need to keep our feet firmly on the ground and to continue to fight for each and every sale. I suspect it’s going to get tougher for us, but we are certainly well placed against our competitors.”
