M&S takes notes from the 1970s

Marks & Spencer showcased a commercial and catwalk-inspired spring 11 womenswear line at its London press day this week.

The retailer, which last week outlined a strategy to axe its Portfolio sub-brand and “clarify” the other sub-brand, has been inspired by the spring 11 catwalks of Marc Jacobs and Gucci and previewed 1970s-inspired billowing maxi dresses and sleek, satin top and trouser sets in rich jewel tones. A minimalist story featured fluid, neutral, tailored silhouettes and intelligent pattern cutting on light crêpes and cottons, and will appeal to M&S’s core customer.
