Next, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s and JD Sports Fashion are among key retailers to update on Christmas trading this week, providing an indication of how the retail sector fared over the festive period.
Next, which said in November that it expected sales in its second half to Christmas Eve to be between flat and -3%, will update the City tomorrow.
John Lewis will also update on trading onTuesday for the five weeks period to January 2. The department store is expected to reveal that sales in the last week of 2009 rose nearly a third on last year.
M&S, which will update the City on Wednesday, is expected to report that sales over Christmas rose for the first time in two years. Christmas sales are forecast to have risen 1% at M&S in the 13 weeks to December 26, compared to a fall of 7% for the same period last year.
