Non-food growth at Tesco was subdued over Christmas after the snow impeded its shoppers from travelling to its stores.
In a trading statement, Tesco said the impact of the weather was “unhelpful” and that “combined with demanding comparisons against last year’s very good performance, meant that growth was subdued.”
Tesco reported modest overall growth in the six weeks to January 8 with UK like-for-likes up 0.6%. Total sales were up 4.2% and Tesco Direct sales were up 18%.”
Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive, said: “Our performance remains solid but was hindered in the run up to the important Christmas trading period in the UK by the disruptive effects of the severe winter weather conditions. Our staff and suppliers did a fantastic job in delivering a great shopping trip for customers in difficult circumstances.”
