River Island axes Graduate Fashion Week sponsorship

Young fashion retailer River Island has axed its sponsorship of Graduate Fashion Week.

Graduate Fashion Week is on the hunt for a new partner to sponsor the annual awards, which River Island had sponsored for the past six years.

The shock announcement came two months after River Island chief executive Richard Bradbury, a strong supporter of young talent in the industry, stepped down from the role in April. He remains with the company as a consultant.

Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week Terry Mansfield, said: “The Trustees and I cannot thank and commend River Island highly enough. They have been such an enthusiastic sponsor, their contribution to the event goes beyond a financial one; the company’s dedication and commitment to supporting young talent, from the very top of the business right down to the shop floor, is outstanding. Now that this year’s event is complete, discussions will begin to find a new title sponsor.”

River Island chief executive Ben Lewis, said: “River Island has always been dedicated to promoting young talent.  Original thinking and new ideas are the foundations on which we built our brand.  However, we really feel that now is the right time to step aside and allow another brand to take on this brilliant mantle.”

Graduate Fashion Week ran last week from June 6 to 10.
