Sainsbury’s said that it had its “biggest ever week in clothing” in its first quarter which ended June 12.
Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said the grocer’s non-food offer “continues to perform strongly”. The best performing week for clothing was over the second bank holiday in Mayin the week ending Friday June 4 when the grocer was running a 25% off offer for its Tu clothing. It said the back-to-school range had been performing particularly well, in particular girl’s skirts.
Sainsbury’s said like-for-like sales in its first quarter rose 1.1% excluding petrol in the 12 weeks to June 12. Tesco yesterday also reported the same like-for-like sales figure, excluding petrol, but for the 13 weeks to May 30.
Total first quarter sales at Sainsbury’s rose 7.6%.
