Sainsbury's reports 'biggest ever week in clothing'

Sainsbury’s said that it had its “biggest ever week in clothing” in its first quarter which ended June 12.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said the grocer’s non-food offer “continues to perform strongly”. The best performing week for clothing was over the second bank holiday in Mayin the week ending Friday June 4 when the grocer was running a 25% off offer for its Tu clothing. It said the back-to-school range had been performing particularly well, in particular girl’s skirts.

Sainsbury’s said like-for-like sales in its first quarter rose 1.1% excluding petrol in the 12 weeks to June 12. Tesco yesterday also reported the same like-for-like sales figure, excluding petrol, but for the 13 weeks to May 30.

Total first quarter sales at Sainsbury’s rose 7.6%.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said: “Our focus on operational excellence has been key to our success in a challenging consumer environment.”
