Fashion sales were lifted at the John Lewis department store chain in the week to April 23 when the country basked in spring sunshine by sales of seasonal items such as sunglasses and kidswear.
Sales of sunglasses jumped 47% during the week, driven by own label and brands such as Ray Ban’s Aviators. Kidswear saw a “strong uplift” as parents prepared for the return to school, especially in footwear where sales of John Lewis own-brand footwear rose by more than 50%.
Sales on johnlewis.com rose 33% on the year with strong performances from womenswear and accessories.
Sales across all categories at the business jumped 7.6% in the week to £53.19m.
16 of John Lewis’s 28 department stores reported positive growth, while 13 reported negative sales.
Sales at its Cambridge store rose 18%, but at Brent Cross sales suffered a fall of 4.3% as footfall was affected by the closure of the M1 at the start of the week due to a fire.
