Supermarket giant Tesco reported steady sales growth in the UK during its third quarter.
The grocer said like-for-like sales, excluding petrol and VAT-adjusted, rose 2.8% over the 13 weeks to November 28, driven by volume growth. Group sales during the period increased 8.8%.
Tesco said its UK division notched up an improving positive like-for-like sales trend in non-food. Online arm Tesco Direct also delivered another strong performance. The retailer did not comment on the performance of its clothing division over the period.
Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said: “We’ve continued to make good progress this quarter with contributions to growth from across the business. We are seeing improving customer confidence and encouraging trends in both the UK and our international businesses, although recessionary conditions still exist in a number of markets.
“Our investment in growth - in new space and from the two acquisitions last year - is providing us with good momentum and a strong platform for the future.”
