Walmart outlines plans to grow George overseas

Walmart, the US giant which owns Asda in the UK, has said that it will roll out Asda’s George clothing line in to further markets.

At the US retailer’s annual shareholders meeting in Arkansas, where attendees were treated to a star-studded event with performances from the likes of Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige, a spokesperson for the group said that George would be added to more stores around the world.

A spokeswoman said: “We’re going to be doing more of it around the world. Canada especially. We’re going to put more of the brand in stores.”

She added: “We see great potential for George in the U.S. and elsewhere.”

However, Walmart vice chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright reiterated that clothing remains a relatively small part of the grocery chain’s business globally. Walmart has not replicated the success of George in the UK in its domestic market.

Castro-Wright said: “Apparel is a small part of our business…60% of our business is in grocery.”

He added: “While apparel makes a lot of the headlines, it isn’t our [most] important business. Apparel is a work in progress. I can summarize it by saying that we are going back to basics in many ways. Basics, as in business basics and basics, literally, in terms of the product itself. We do extremely well when we sell everyday needs for our customers, anything from socks and underwear to jeans and T-shirts. That’s where we excel and that’s where our value proposition can differentiate us from other retailers.”

Sales at Walmart’s international division this year hit the $100bn (£693.1m) sales mark, accounting for one quarter of the retail giant’s annual sales. In five years the group said it would create 500,000 jobs around the world.
