Womenswear drives growth in John Lewis fashion sales

Fashion sales crept up at John Lewis last week rising 3.2%, with womenswear delivering the strongest growth.

Sales in total across the department store chain rose 7.6% in the week to November 17 and online sales grew 30.8%.

An 8.9% rise in womenswear sales helped revenues at John Lewis’ fashion arm grow by 3.2%.

Operations director Dino Rocos added: Menswear also saw good results from competitor activities and, despite being against a comparable event last year, achieved an overall growth of 5.3%.”

The Swindon branch had the best performance with sales rising 11%, closely followed by Poole at 10.6%.

Rocos said: “Newcastle recovered well after a difficult week, despite losing two full days of trade due to an issue with power.

“The branch traded well through Friday and Saturday and the stock management and customer service teams worked hard to take in additional deliveries and catch up with the processing, minimising the impact of the disruptions.”
