The exciting product would have looked more impressive in a slightly less tired shopfit
River Island has been ploughing a less girlish route for a couple of seasons, and this continues for spring 10. So while there are flippy tiered skirts and floral-print cardis, there is also lots of 1980s-inspired pale denim, sludgy-toned jumpsuits and gold sheeny combats. Tribal comes through via gold sequins on black jersey tops, while the best catwalk inspiration is an Alexander Wang-style pair of jersey and denim 1990s-style baggy jeans.
On a quiet day, staff were happy to allow Drapers into the changing room with 12 items, showing sensible customer service. The storefit could do with updating - the red Formica-style changing room doors have been around for years. The windows look a lot more enticing, showing off River Island’s great footwear offer.
Retro Chelsea Girl T-shirts are a snip at a tenner, while animal and chain-print figure-hugging jersey dresses in pink and blue are very competitive at £25. Giant paillettes and ruched appliqué florals decorate simple cardis but push the price up to £80. A striped body is very reasonable at £15.
