Fashion forward but store backward - River lets down the regions.
River Island brings grunge chic to Cheltenham with a little inspiration from chain-of-the-moment All Saints. Best are the chambray jogger pants with sweat waistband and ankle cuffs, a red raglan sleeve Fair Isle knit, a quilted pale grey shirt, an elephant graphic T-shirt and a navy quilted jacket.
This must be the only River Island store not to have been refurbished for years, as it carries its old fascia and interior. Its location in the Regent Arcade puts River
at a disadvantage - its contemporary rivals such as Next, Cult and Republic can be found on High Street.
River’s prices aren’t the cheapest but it has to be said that, apart from the indies in town, the store offers the only real insight into right-now young fashion, affording it a little extra headroom on prices. The jogger jeans are £44.99, a military white shirt with silver buttons is £26.99 and a wrinkled leather shirt-jacket hybrid is £110. Graphic tees at £12.99 don’t look quite so competitive with such a strong range at less than half the price at Primark.
