River Island

Interpreting trends in a unique way, River Island is back to its best this autumn

Product 9

River Island works hard at distilling the key trends to suit its narrower customer profile and pulls it off with aplomb. Engineered boots come in heeled versions as do metallic-detail biker boots while over-the-knee boots snake up the thigh in blue and purple mixed materials. Feather-trimmed ankle boots stand out and are nowhere else on the high street this season. Men’s engineered boots are backed with serious conviction with no less than 10 options.

Experience 8

This season River Island remains the best clothing operator at merchandising footwear, using chairs as props and mixing its bags and scarves to tell compelling trend stories on low-level display units. Extra sales come through displays of clear shoe boxes and comfort insoles. More use could be made of shoes across the shopfloor in this branch though.

Value 8

A new “higher standard” range has been introduced, which presumably refers to additional comfort and quality, though this is not explained in store. Pointed red platform courts are “higher standard” and retail for £64.99. The mixed material over-the-knee boots are an exceptional £150 and flat over-the-knees with tassels and studs are just £84.99 while feather ankle boots are £140. Biker boots at £150 are a little pricey though. A free heel and tip repair deal is a nice touch.
