Richard Akers, Managing director, retail, Land Securities

As managing director of property developer Land Securities, Richard Akers needs broad shoulders.

With a retail portfolio of more than 60 shopping centres in the UK, sites under his control include the Bullring in Birmingham and White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds, while St David’s 2 in Cardiff and Trinity Quarter in Leeds are in the pipeline.

Land Securities has been prescient enough to produce sustainability reports since 1986, and under Akers’ guidance it has committed to including more independent retailers in its schemes. The company is also working to afford retailers’ greater flexibility with leases, monthly rents, green leases, service charges and lease assignment; all sensible moves given the current climate.
