Robert Bensoussan, Chairman, LK Bennett and co-founder, Sirius Equity

Luxury guru Robert Bensoussan took the bold step of buying into footwear and womenswear retailer LK Bennett in a deal thought to be worth £80 million just as the economic crisis took hold.

The acquisition reunited Bensoussan with private equity firm Phoenix Equity, which worked with him to turn Jimmy Choo into a global brand.

Bensoussan is expected to push LK Bennett upmarket, further boosting its healthy margins. A designer collaboration could also be on the cards to help him in his ambition to take the business global.

The tough market means his masterplan may not be easy but given his past successes it is certainly attainable.
