Sainsbury's expected to reveal further gains in clothing market share

Sainsbury’s is expected to reveal further gains in clothing market share in its full-year results tomorrow.

The UK’s third biggest grocer is expected to post a 5% rise in pre-tax profits to around £700m for the year to March 17, according to reports.

Sales of clothing at Sainsbury’s have been boosted by TV presenter Gok Wan’s range, which went in store last October.

The Gok for Tu range, comprising 13 styles with prices starting at £20, debuted in 200 stores. Pieces included a kimono, priced at £30, featuring one of Wan’s signature prints.

Non-food managing director Luke Jensen said at the time that more space would be dedicated to clothing over the next few years, with new store openings and the development of existing sites.

Sainsbury’s launched its Tu clothing range in September 2004. Over the past six years, the retailer has seen its share of the £9.9bn value fashion market more than treble. By last October, Sainsbury’s was the seventh-largest clothing retailer in the UK by volume.

The grocer reshuffled its senior management team earlier this year, appointing retail and logistics director Roger Burnley as managing director of general merchandise, clothing and logistics, leading the grocer’s non-food business. Burnley took up his role on March 19, reporting directly to chief executive Justin King.
