Premium Yorkshire-based super-indie Sarah Coggles took the top spot in Drapers’ Inspiring Independents awards last night.
Sarah Coggles saw off competition from fashion stalwarts Dover Street Market, Matches and last year’s winner Browns to be crowned number one.
Mark Bage, co-owner of the contemporary men’s and women’s wear indie, was visibly emotional as he accepted the accolade from Drapers’ editor-in-chief Caroline Nodder.
“It means so much as this has been voted for by other retailers,” said Bage. “Independents represent what is great about this industry and they are what make high streets different. It is a great honour.”
A multiple Drapers Fashion Awards winner, Sarah Coggles is revered by suppliers for “promoting quality and establishing a true difference in the market”, according to Diesel managing director Jonny Hewlett.
Now in its second year, Drapers Inspiring Independents, which is judged and voted for by Drapers readers, grew from 50 to 100 boutiques for 2012, with the winners celebrating last night at an exclusive party in London’s Kensington Roof Gardens.
Other notable boutiques who joined Sarah Coggles, Dover Street Market, Matches and Browns in the top 10 were The Dressing Room in St Albans, Black White Denim in Wilmslow, Manchester’s Oi Polloi, Liverpool’s Cricket, Jules B in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Lewis Yates in Billericay at number 10.
Indies voted for their peers for a variety of reasons, from standout product to excellent customer service to best-in-class multi-channel strategies.
