Sarah Coggles in York

One of the original northern boutiques, the Sarah Coggles business was started by Victoria Bage more than 35 years ago and has a unique story behind it.

The business was named Sarah Coggles in 1976 after Victoria, about to open her first store, discovered her lover was having an affair with his secretary, Sarah Coggles. Victoria did not suffer fools gladly and on discovering the affair, she promptly threw him out and named the store after her to remind him of his mistake.

The two Sarah Coggles buildings date back to the 14th-century and are a mix of ancient beams, spiral staircases, modern glass rooms and leather-clad changing rooms.

The retailer has one of the country’s most diverse collections, from up-and-coming designers to established fashion heavyweights. But even the collections that we all know well have been refreshingly reinterpreted.

The extremely knowledgeable staff are the real lifeblood of the store. Everybody that works at Sarah Coggles has to start from the bottom; all the management team at one point swept the floor.
