SGS in Southend-on-Sea, Essex

Chosen by Nick Crook, brand consultant at Picnic Brands consultancy.

SGS is one of fashion’s best-kept secrets in the south-east of England.

Established in 2001 and formally known as the Sunglasses Shop, SGS originally made a name for itself as the ultimate destination for sunglasses and accessories in Essex. Trading from its 2,500 sq ft, three-storey building on the High Street, SGS now offers a strong mix of footwear and clothing for men and women, from upcoming brands such as Apple Bottoms and Desigual, as well as local T-shirt label Dirty Velvet, which has politically thought-provoking graphics.

The store has recently been refurbished, and the new design is well considered and visually strong, with eye-catching artwork by local tattoo and graffiti artists and an innovative magnetic wall that displays footwear and entices customers to pick up the product.

The buy is refreshingly confident, and the store is a local destination to buy unique brands, which, given the recent market conditions, is good to see.
