Shop Direct buys Woolworths and Ladybird brands

Shop Direct Group, the owner of Littlewoods, has bought the Woolworths and Ladybird kidswear brands from administrators Deloitte.

Shop Direct Group, the owner of Littlewoods, has bought the Woolworths and Ladybird kidswear brands from administrators Deloitte.

Shop Direct will relaunch the Woolworths and Ladybird brands as online operations later this year. Ladybird will have a separate standalone site.

Shop Direct chief executive Mark Newton-Jones said: “We are delighted to be relaunching the Woolworths name online. Woolworths is a much loved brand that engenders huge affection among British consumers and is an important part of the country’s retail heritage. In what will be Woolworths’ 100th year, we are proud to be reviving the brand for future generations.”

Neville Kahn, partner at Deloitte and joint administrator of Woolworths added: “We are pleased to have achieved a deal which will enable the Woolworths and Ladybird childrenswear brand names to continue.”

Kahn added: “The process of selling the Woolworths property portfolio continues with former stores under offer from prospective purchasers. We are currently bound by confidentiality agreements regarding the numbers and locations of stores under offer while negotiations continue.” 

Shop Direct,is owned by brother Sir David Barclay and Sir Frederick Barclay. It owns the Littlewoods, Empire, Great Universal and Marshall Ward brands.
