Sportswear drives fashion sales at John Lewis

A strong performance in sportswear, prompted by the Olympics, helped drive fashion sales at John Lewis last week.

Fashion sales in the week to August 11 climbed 18.9% compared to the same year with sales of sportswear up a massive 177.7% as the London Olympics drew to a close.

Kidswear and babywear also had a good week with sales up 147% on the previous year while men’s branded casualwear also saw strong sales, up by 29.8%.

In womenswear the retailer’s JL and Weekend collections were the star performers driving sales up by 28.2%.

The retailer also said that sales of its London 2012 merchandise had also been a “huge success”.

Overall sales at John Lewis were up 14.9% on last year with 18 branches seeing an increase on last year.

Online sales at johnlewis.com were also up by 36.4% compared to the same week the previous year.  

“We have had a really positive response from our customers on new ranges so with the weather more mixed this week, I think we can look forward to another strong week of trade,” said David Barford director of selling operations in Region B at John Lewis.
