Strong online sales drives John Lewis growth

John Lewis sales rose 11.4% this week compared to the same week last year, driven by a “cracking” online performance. recorded a 47% increase in sales in the week to January 21 with fashion sales up 71%.

Overall fashion sales were also up by 9.6%, driven by newness in store and a particularly strong performance in womenswear.

Branded menswear was also strong with some ranges up 33% as spring ranges began to sell.

The retailer reported an increase in sales at 16 of its stores including Liverpool which was up 11%, Leicester rose 8.2% and Norwich improved by 6.1%.

John Lewis director of selling operations in Region A, Nat Wakely, said: “Looking ahead, Valentine’s Day will be the next main calendar feature, although currently stocktaking is probably on more of our minds.”
