Strong start to high street Sales

High street multiples had a strong start to their summer Sales last week, with holidaywear, discount designer labels and Father’s Day helping to boost trade.

Department store Selfridges said it had a record first day of Sale, which started last Thursday, and trading continued to be strong throughout the rest of the week.
“We had double-digit growth at the London store on the first day,” said a spokeswoman, who added that womenswear and accessories designers such as Alice Temperley had good sell-through and almost sold out by the end of the second day.

Debenhams, which launched its sale last Wednesday, said shoppers had been particularly attracted to discounted holidaywear at its department stores, while John Lewis said its fashion sales were up by double digits although its Sale does not start until June 27. Branded menswear sales at the department store chain rose by 50% last week.

However, one multiple director pointed out that menswear sales had been boosted by Father’s Day.
