Sunshine helps John Lewis sales grow

Fashion sales at John Lewis rose 0.8% in the week to March 19 with the sunny weather driving sales of spring ranges.

The sun influenced shopping choices with linen in menswear up 32% year-on-year and swimwear up 54%. New ranges, such as the launch of Boss in two branches, also performed well.

Online sales soared 28% year-on-year.

The figures were impacted by the fall of Easter and Mother’s Day this year but the department store said it expected sales to increase steadily in the run-up to both events and the royal wedding.

Total sales across the department store chain rose 1.4% to £52.2m during the week, though sales dropped off on Saturday as would-be shoppers chose to enjoy the sunshine.
