Supermarkets in discount war

The supermarkets have begun a discounting frenzy with Sales launched on clothing by Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda.

Six weeks before Christmas, Tesco is offering a mid-season Sale on 90 items, while George at Asda has launched a half-price Sale on nearly 500 items across babywear, kidswear, menswear, womenswear, footwear and lingerie. Sainsbury’s has also slashed prices at its Tu range by 25% with the promotion ending today.

Last year, high street retailers including Marks & Spencers and Debenhams entered in to a frenzied discounting strategy after the collapse of Lehman Brothers led to a drop-off in footfall and mounting stock levels.

Last week, M&S chief executive and chairman Sir Stuart Rose said that he would remain full-price in the run up to Christmas.
