Talking shoes with Deborah Lyons of Mechante of London.
What is the Mechante design aesthetic and signature style?
Mixed materials, artisan craftsmanship, comfort in spite of the soaring heels, and a gold triangle stretched up the sole.
How did you set up the brand and develop it as a business?
I started my line aged 24 soon after graduating Parsons and having spent a year in the factories in Italy. The first major steps were developing the branding and establishing retail relationships with store such as Harrods and Liberty. Since then we have also launched our own E-Commerce site which we’ll be developing over the coming few seasons.
What is the theme of your AW11 collection?
My AW11 collection is inspired by witches, vampires, and all the other lost souls of the occult world.
What is your inspiration for SS12?
The SS12 collection is inspired by 7 Deadly Sinners… I’m working on a short campaign film at the moment with 7 “It” Brits which will be premiered after fashion week.
What are your future plans for the brand?
Lots more shoes, a few fashion films, and some other surprises…
I’m developing a line of unisex flats amongst other things too which is exciting.
I’m also doing the shoes for breakout US designer Joy Cioci (formerly at Gucci) for her NY fashion week show next week.
What trade shows do you do?
At the moment I show in NY and Paris in our own Mechante sales room (we’ll be at the Lotti again this season). In the next few seasons I’ll probably start showing at Premiere Classe, But for now we want to target very specific buyers.
Where are you stocked?
In the UK we’re stocked at Harrods, Libertys, The Box Boutique
Do you do bespoke wedding shoes?
I’m actually in the process of developing a wedding collection and ‘Mechante Bridal’ will be available next year.
