Former Debehams chief executive Rob Templeman is this year’s winner of the Drapers Fashion Awards lifetime achievement award.
Credited by the judges as the man responsible for turning Debenhams into the success it is today, Templeman, who retired from his post in September this year, picked up the award at the ceremony held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday (November 16).
Templeman was honoured following an eight year tenure at Debenhams during which time the company floated on the stock exchange and significantly reduced the £1bn debt which it was saddled with when Templeman took over in 2003.
Also recognised at the ceremony for her contribution to the fashion industry was former Telegraph fashion director, Hilary Alexander who picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Fashion award.
Alexander has enjoyed a varied and high profile career in the industry and is considered one of the most respected industry commentators and a champion of young fashion designers.
Other notable winners on the night included department store Harrods which picked-up the Department Store of the Year accolade after impressing the judges with its continued innovation, lifestyle retailer White Stuff which picked-up the Best New Store or Department of the Year for its George Street store in Edinburgh and contemporary womenswear indie The Dressing Room in St Albans which claimed the coveted Independent Retailer of the Year title.
Brand category winners included womenswear brand Darling, recognised for its impressive sell through rates and stockist list; menswear brand Farrah Vintage, which the judges said is both trend led and commercial at an affordable price; and young fashion brand Fred Perry, which has pulled off a number of notable collaborations to high acclaim.
Judge Peter Cronin sales director at lingerie brand Panache said that the standout theme this year was the investment in online and in social media.
“Gone are the days when you can just stand in your store waiting for customers to come in and buy something. It is tough out there for retailers and you have to really be on top of your game to make sure you drive people to your store and interact with your customers.
“The best retailers and brands recognise that and that’s why they stood out in the judging process.”
