The Famous to close after 126 years

Menswear indie The Famous in Cheltenham is to shut its doors after 126 years of trading.

The retailer, which opened in 1886 and stocks brands including Barbour, Alan Paine and Loake, will close at the end of the year as the owners cannot afford to renew the lease.

The business is currently run by the Cole family after AN Cole bought the business back in 1896. His great grandson Ross Cole is now chairman.

Cole told the Daily Mail: “The building is very expensive to maintain and stay in and obviously we have felt the pinch quite a bit.

“The business is still going well but we decided, after discussing among ourselves, that we simply couldn’t replicate what we have here in a modern shop premises.

“It’s a very sad day and I have already umpteen letters and phone calls from customers which brings tears to my eyes.”

The store will be holding a closing down sale starting on November 1 (Thursday). The retailer will still continue to operate its kidswear store in the town.
