TK Maxx hires buyers for Europe assault

TJX Europe, the European parent of off-price retailer TK Maxx, has appointed three buyers to drive its ambitious European expansion plans.

Former Liberty buying and merchandise director Jane Davies has joined the womenswear department, reporting to senior merchandise manager Grant Groome.

Lin Sherlock, previously head of group buying for brands at Mothercare, and Brian Thompson, former buying manager for Woolworths, have joined the kidswear, toys and nursery department, reporting to vice-president, general merchandise manager Paul Kerr.

The hirings follow the departure of TK Maxx divisional merchandise manager for womenswear Caroline Withey in June. Withey joined discount etailer Brand Alley UK this week as buying director. TJX Europe senior executive vice-president, group president Paul Sweetenham said the retailer had continued to outperform.

He said: “Consumer demand remains very strong for our unique off-price concepts and great brands at excellent value. We are outperforming our expectations, even in today’s challenging environment.”
In the first quarter to May 2, TJX Europe reported a like-for-like sales increase of 6% and a 42% rise in profits to $15.5m (£9.4m).
