Tom Chapman, Managing director, Matches

Tom Chapman, founder of London-based designer mini chain Matches, has had a stellar year, which was rounded off by him walking away with the Best Designer Store and Best Independent Retailer prizes at the Drapers Awards 2008.

He started the year as he meant to go on, by adding a boutique-cum-art gallery on London’s Marylebone High Street to his nine-store Matches chain. Rumour has it that he may be signing up for a store in The Village in White City’s Westfield London mega mall.

His empire also includes three Diane von Furstenberg and two MaxMara boutiques, and a burgeoning own-label business, Freda. But it is his editing of designer collections – including Alexander McQueen, Missoni and Bottega Veneta – that makes him the darling of the style press and fashion fans.

“He drives Matches with innovation and gusto. Tom would never sit back and get complacent – he’s got ideas coming out of his ears,” says Grazia editor Jane Bruton.
