An interview with Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s director, Martyn Roberts.
This February Vauxhall Fashion Scout will be in it’s eighth season. What made you decide to start Vauxhall Fashion Scout?
MR - We knew that designers wanted a professional yet affordable place to show that was near the LFW tents in South Kensington. When Vauxhall began sponsoring us we were able to develop it from a venue that showcased new talent into a full event that lasted all fashion week. Over the past seven seasons we have grown into the largest independent event during London Fashion Week that showcases the very best of new talent.
Hermione de Paula - Merit Award Winner February 2010
Has your mission changed since you started?
MR- Very much so. We have always cared about the designers that we showcase – wanting them to succeed as sustainable creative businesses. What we have realised along the way is that new designers need a lot of support and nurturing to ensure that they grow. We now run a year-long mentoring programme where experts are able to advise emerging designers.
David Koma - Merit Award Winner September 2009
Why is it important to support emerging talent, and how is it important to the established fashion indusrty?
MR - London Fashion Week is renown around the world for showcasing creativity. People come here to see the best new talent – so it is vitally important that we support them.
How many shows do you have each season?
MR - Last season we had 30 catwalk shows and presentations – including our menswear day. Next season we will have a similar amount plus we will be running our first designer exhibition. We have chosen to do an exhibition so that the newest of designers and accessories designers will be able to showcase their collections.
William Tempest - Merit Award Winner February 2009
How do you choose the Merit Award winner and the “Ones to Watch”?
MR - We have a Selection Panel that features experts from across the industry who are actively working with and supporting emerging designers. Designers are selected by their creativity, quality of work and the stage their business is at. We try to see their full potential and what will be needed to help them achieve their goals.
