A strong performance in womenswear boosted fashion sales at John Lewis last week.
Fashion sales were up 4.4% in the week to August 20 driven by new brands and good availability in womenswear.
John Lewis online saw growth of 33% in fashion sales driven by kidswear, which was strongly supported by orders placed for regulation schoolwear, and women’s accessories.
Overall total weekly sales were up 2.6% to £53.4m, a performance that head of corporate sales Simon Williams described as “credible” in volatile conditions.
Oxford Street was the top branch for year-on-year growth, followed closely by Solihull and Glasgow.
Williams said: “Against a background of the country returning to post-unrest normality, media reports of falling disposable incomes, extraordinary turbulence in the financial markets and changeable weather, it was encouraging to see sales perform creditably again.”
