Womens wear: Key silhouettes, S/S 12

In part two of our S/S 12 special, we look at key shapes for trousers, tops, knits and jersey.

  • Square A square, longer-length tunic with sleeves cut into a square shoulder. Expect to see it as a button-through shirt or as a plain heavy tunic
  • Shell top Cut to form a slight A-line and designed to be tucked in, a high boat-neck gives the illusion of the back neck worn at the front. Simple narrow sleeves fall over the hands
  • Wrap This low-slung double-breasted wrap blouse is soft and fluid, and has a light jacket quality

  • Gym-slip dress Integral shaping and ribbing forms a nipped-in silhouette for this gently flared shape, which combines sporty and formal features
  • Deconstructed cardigan The S/S 12 update on the open-front cardigan. Organically misshapen patching in multi-gauge stitch mix layering combines to create this spliced style
  • Constructed tank Hand-worked structured stitch dictates this simple rectangular form

  • The fluid gentleman Gentlemen’s cut trousers, which sit on the hips. This soft, smart shape works well in fluid lightweight suiting. An update on S/S 11’s 1970s flare
  • High-rise gathered short A high-waisted long, full short for a more casual option. Drawn in at the waist with a long rise and a slightly tapered leg
  • Dance pant A high-rise simple jazz pant. This sport pyjama updates the luxe track pant, which dominates as a relaxed/formal option for S/S 11

  • Twist-to-fit top A simple tee is updated by twisting the front panel to create innovative neckline volume
  • Cascade drape dress An asymmetrically cascading one-shoulder draped jersey dress, inspired by 1970s disco
  • Oblong cover-up A roomy mesh throw-on tunic with tie belt informs this extended T-shirt shape
